So what was it all about ???

Xigaxe (aka Shigatse) - Lhasa

Today we headed for the capital of Tibet, Lhasa.
Got a good photo of how much the locals can carry on their bike. It was a little bike carrying stuff that made it wider than a car!!!
.
When we finally got to Lhasa we were running on fumes. So, we stopped to fill up at a petrol station. Lots of waiting around. We weren't allowed to wait on the forecount but we didn't know why. Our Guide tried negotiating with the Petrol Station owner. The next thing we knew was the Police turned up to move us on.

Turns out May is the birthday month of the exiled Dalai Lama. Apparently, some of the Tibetan Monks see that as an oppertunity to protest. Sadly their protest take the form of going into a garage buy petrol, pouring it over themselves and setting light to themselves. That must be such a horrible way to go. It show commitment but, personally, I can't think of anything that would make me do that to myself.

Still the Petrol Station owner wasn't used to serving forgien tourist and thought we might be protester. So, called the police. No point in arguing. The Police out there carry guns !!!
